Lib Dem MEP Sharon Bowles has called on manufacturers to reduce the amount of packaging used to wrap Easter eggs.

Despite Government rules which require manufacturers to reduce packaging to a bare minimum, many Easter eggs still come wrapped in foil, plastic and cardboard.

According to a parliamentary report, this year Sainsbury's and Nestlé came out on top with the most efficiently packaged egg and the only egg with packaging that is widely recycled, respectively.

Sharon Bowles said:

"Opening an Easter egg can be a bit like pass the parcel - tearing off layers of useless wrapping to find, in some cases, a very small prize.

"In general, manufacturers are doing better this year than last but some are still producing ridiculously over-packaged Easter eggs.

"For those that recycle, excess packaging amounts to more hassle. For those that don't, excess packaging amounts to more waste.

"In short, manufacturers need to do better to reduce their packaging".
