Belinda Walters - new Lib Dem councillor in Horsham
Lib Dems in Horsham are celebrating after achieving a remarkable turnaround in a previously safe Conservative seat where voters have elected hardworking local campaigner Belinda Walters.
Voters in the Holbrook West ward of Horsham sent a message to the Conservatives that they are fed up with their Tory council's inability to look after their money properly, parking stealth tax, and lack of concern for Horsham and its people.
The result makes a mockery of national opinion polls and is evidence that the Lib Dems are a major threat to the Tories across the South East.
"We were ready for a General Election and this result proves it. I'm absolutely delighted that local people have put their trust in me and I'll work hard to hold the Tories to account for their financial bungling and neglect of our area." says Belinda.
"Voters can see that Cameron is all spin and doesn't know what it's like to live in the real world. He'll say anything to get elected; just like Tories round here. The Lib Dems are the only party with real policies on issues like tax, the NHS, and education that will make a real positive difference to people's lives.
"A swing like the one we achieved here would have been more than enough to have taken both Guildford and Eastbourne from the Tories at a General Election, and sent two more Lib Dem MPs to Westminster to stand up for people across the South East."
The result was: LD 602 Con 554 Lab 52 BNP 162.
The new position on the council is Conservatives 30 seats, Lib Dems 12 and Independent 2.
